The 2nd Regional Lymphedema Therapist Networking Meeting was held in Irvine, CA the weekend of Feb 1-3, 2008. CircAid Medical, Inc. was a contributing sponsor as well as exhibitor at the event.
The physiology and pathophysiology of phlebo- lymphedema was presented by Andrea Brennan, OT, on Friday night. Andrea adapted her presentation from a session she gave at the American College of Phlebology in Jan this year. She demonstrated how CVI morphs from too much blood in veins --to fluid in tissues --to re-absorption overwhelming the system = phlebo-lymphatic disease. She then illustrated the progression into alteration of lymphatics resulting in worsening CVI and possible venous ulcers. Andrea also discussed how external compression acts as artificial valves.
Jack Butler, of ImpediMedÒ gave a demonstration of the Bioimpedence Analyzer to assess unilateral lymphedema. Dr. James Breeedlove displayed a clinical array of photos that exhibited podiatry concerns and lymphedema. Case studies were reviewed, as were reimbursement issues. Diane Drake, PhD, RN of UC, Irvine presented an overview of research concerning exercise and lymphedema. As always, the round table discussions were very lively.
The Low Level Laser was presented by Ann Angel, CEO, Rian Corp and Karen Ashforth, OT, Dominican Hospital, Santa Cruz, CA. Ann gave a brief explanation of laser physics and Karen discussed financial strategies for acquiring the laser. Ann has a cohort of therapists in Australia who have a great deal of experience with the laser.
